A Message from the Superintendent
Charles I. Poff, Jr.

Dear Citizen:

Located in Western Roanoke County near Dixie Caverns, the Western Virginia Regional Jail is a regional partnership between the Counties of Franklin, Montgomery, Roanoke and the City of Salem. This state-of-the-art jail facility will be approximately 264,000 sq. ft. and will provide a rated capacity for 605 inmates with another 200 beds double-bunked for a total of 805 inmates upon opening. This facility will help ease the current overcrowded and potentially unsafe conditions at the local jail facilities of the four partnering jurisdictions.

At the Western Virginia Regional Jail, we are an agency that is committed to excellence.  We are dedicated to providing quality services in all areas of our responsibility and to the localities that we serve.  Each staff member goes through a rigorous selection process to ensure that we have a top of the line staff and a strong team who are all devoted to the goals of the Department.

Professionalism is of the upmost importance.  The regional jail will seek national accreditation through the American Correctional Association (ACA), which will provide a highly professional and safe place of employment for the staff.  We will also seek LEED certification and the design includes several green features to help protect the environment and to reduce energy costs over the life of the building.

We are using the most state-of-the-art technology so that we can provide detailed and up-to-date information to staff to make our operations continually more efficient and effective.  In order to provide an appropriate living environment for offenders and a healthy working environment for staff, the Western Virginia Regional Jail will be a tobacco-free environment.

We do not take our responsibilities lightly and we will persistently strive for distinction and excellence. We invite you to become a part of our professional team here at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.
